Cotton vs Modal vs Bamboo: Which Fabric Is Best for Indian Summers?

Walk into any clothing store and you will see cotton, modal, bamboo and rayon sitting side by side. They can feel similar on the hanger, but they behave very differently in Indian heat and humidity. Here is a plain-language guide to choosing the right fabric.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural plant fibre and the classic choice for Indian summers. It absorbs sweat, lets air through and gets softer with every wash. Best for: daily kurtis, office wear and humid cities like Mumbai, Surat and Chennai. Watch out for: it creases easily and can shrink slightly if washed hot.

Handloom cotton

Handloom cotton is woven by hand on traditional looms, like Narayanpet or Mangalagiri. The weave is slightly looser, so it is even more breathable, and each piece has small natural irregularities. Best for: everyday ethnic wear that feels special.

Modal

Modal is made from beech-tree pulp. It is very smooth, drapes beautifully and resists shrinking and pilling better than cotton. Best for: co-ord sets and dressier daywear. Watch out for: hand wash in cold water to keep it smooth.

Bamboo

Bamboo fabric is extremely soft, naturally breathable and pulls moisture away from the skin. Best for: loungewear, travel outfits and sensitive skin.

Rayon (viscose)

Rayon is also plant-based and drapes well, but it is less breathable than cotton and can shrink and weaken when wet. It is widely used because it is cheap. Best for: occasional wear rather than daily summer use.

Polyester and synthetics

Synthetics are durable and wrinkle-free but trap heat and sweat. In Indian summers they are the least comfortable choice.
